A Rendezvous with Mr Wonderful

This is a photo-story about the tea-dancing scene in London.    It’s a story about romantic afternoons tripping the light fantastic and whizzing around the dance floor.  Sometimes the music is provided by the legendary Mr Wonderful who is one of the many characters in the story who has been keeping London supplied with tea dances for over 20 years……….he has quite the following!

A tea dance, or thé dansant (French: literally dancing tea) is an afternoon or early-evening dance. The function evolved from the concept of afternoon tea, and its origins can be traced back to the French colonization of Morocco.

Ballroom standards are the most common partner dances danced at these events including the Waltz, Tango, Viennese Waltz, Foxtrot, Quickstep, Samba, Cha-cha-cha, Rumba, Paso Doble and Jive.

  1. Tracey this is great. I love the portraits especially. You’ve really captured something special and it tells a good story. Also like the way you’ve used the quotes. Very cool.

    • Thanks Jo for the kind words : )
Was quite a ruthless edit for me (i had maybe a 1000 images or more) loads that I liked but didn’t use because they didn’t evoke the title of the project……interesting way of working which I will do more of in future. Start with the title then take the photos rather than the other way around.
Would be great to see your project – do you have it online anywhere?

  2. The man that was so determined to dance his own way quote made me laugh. A great line. Some really lovely work, sometimes melancholic but also spirited. Just the sort that appeals to me. I really like the image of the couple dancing up by the satge with the drummer and the other musician going through the motions. It has a beautiful Hopperesque feel to it. Mx

  3. Thanks M. I’m so flattered Hopperesque made my day!
Yes funny quote from a very smart, interesting 80+ yr old ex flamenco dancer!
    Still on for Thurs?

  4. It was the best quote I have heard in a long time. My formative years were at the Royal British Legion and I think that is why I love the idea of people dancing in slightly shabby surroundings.

Yes, still on for Thursday. Hope you are too? Be lovely to see you.

    Mx

  5. …..and it didn’t come out of my mouth even..right? RBL…..really? Right, quiz you about that on Thurs….call you then. x
